GREENSBORO — Father Thomas Berry, a Greensboro native and world-renowned cultural historian, died Monday at the Well-Spring retirement community. He was 94.

Berry, a Passionist Catholic priest, was considered a leading ecological thinker and held eight honorary degrees and numerous awards and honors. His ideas have influenced people across the world — from corporate globalization critic David Korten to Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai of Kenya.

Berry’s health had declined over the years and his family expected his death, said his sister, Dr. Margaret Berry.

“He had a quiet death and the family was with him when he died,” Berry said. “We have people from all over the world who are e-mailing and planning to attend one of the four services.”

Thomas Berry articulated a vision of an approaching “Ecozoic Era” in which human societies would live in a sustainable and mutually beneficial manner with the natural world. The Center for Ecozoic Studies in Chapel Hill plans to publish a tribute to Berry this year.

“It’s a big loss,” said Nelson Stover, a Greensboro resident and Berry follower. “One of the great minds of the 20th century is not with us anymore. At the same time, there’s no question that his legacy will continue.”

Born William Nathan Berry, the third child of Elizabeth and William Berry, he took the name Thomas as a young adult in honor of the Catholic saint and philosopher Thomas Aquinas.

Nearly since that time, he was a student of the earth and the human condition.

Throughout his life he conducted an ongoing study of the ecological nature of Earth, the way everything affects everything else. He realized then that human beings are a part of a larger natural order.

“The catastrophe of our time is the loss of any real human connection to the natural world,” he told a reporter in 2005. “That’s why ecology alone is not the answer because it’s a 'use’ relationship to the natural world. The earth is saying, 'You used me.”

Trees, birds — all living things — have rights, he wrote. They require that people treat the natural world not as an object, but as a living being. “If nothing has rights but humans, then everything else becomes the victim,” Berry said.

Berry’s vision has special relevance today. Concerns about climate change, species loss, and depletion of natural resources have propelled the nearly 30-year-old sustainability movement into mainstream consciousness. N.C. cities — including Greensboro and Winston-Salem — as well as universities and corporations, have hired sustainability managers to oversee initiatives such as using green building standards and encouraging people to drive less.

The Berry family will hold funeral services in Greensboro, New York and Vermont. The Greensboro service will begin with an open-casket visitation from 11 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Wednesday in the Narthex entrance of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Road, followed by the memorial service at 2 p.m.

The Greensboro memorial will conclude with a reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m., hosted by the Passionists in Well-Spring Retirement Community Auditorium, 4100 Well-Spring Drive.

Donations honoring Thomas’s memory may be made to the Thomas Berry Foundation, c/o Mary Evelyn Tucker, 29 Spoke Drive, Woodbridge CT 06525. Inquiries and greetings may be made by e-mail to margare946@bellsouth.net.

Self awareness,

Hmm? It seems that I have been doing a lot of self sabotage as of late or procrastination or feeling the time is not right or etc, etc, etc. Those ego thoughts don't seem to serve me very well in the manifestation of abundance in healthier area's of my life...

This morning... I am feeling a bit blue, the weather has been dreary for 24 hours, I did get to take some photographs yesterday of the raindrops on flowers and leave, that experience always takes me into a deeper creative place... Most grateful for that.
So this morning my body is tried and sore, I read a lot yesterday, a book called Blood Countess, about a women Elizabeth Bathory in the 16th Century Hungry,  and her ancestor in the 20th century... it is a bit odd and shocking at times. I was reading because I did not want to spend the day on the laptop, my intention was to study and write a paper/draft for class, didn't get that done...

I know another day, another moment to make Higher choices so writing is one of those. Keeping things in my head is not helpful or useful. Plus yesterday on my blog here on Gaia I wrote a list of activities of healing and blogging is one of those activities.
Blogging/writing shifts the energy, makes ideas, and thought more real, allows them to emerge into the light or just drift off into the mist of day if unuseful.

also what was getting at is that I have events I can attend, opportunities to be social or at lest out of the house creating opportunities for healing, abundance, living more fully and many times I decline or just talk myself out of going. That is where the self-sabotage comes in, or procrastination comes in, I use money as an issue too.
Today I can use the rain, yet I do have an event to attend this evening and invited a friend to go with me... one way to create opportunity to move beyond myself.

In the practice of coaching, the coach ask "so how am I going to know if you accomplish this?" they may also ask, "how are you going to feel, if you go or don't go?"
With this blog I have created a coach and a responsibility to myself and to others to show up for life, a life more fully active, creative and joyful...

Continued awareness

Even though for weeks I had the intention of attending Peter Lien's Open House/Photography Studio for First Friday in Philadelphia Pa. my mind and ego kept playing tricks on me, saying "ah it is too wet, your tried, you have not had dinner yet" etc, I finally got myself together and got out of the house rain and all..

I am thrilled that I did, I had a great time meeting new people, manned with my camera taking photos of the event, chatting with the guys, observing... Was thrilled when Peter excitedly suggested I take studio photos of people at the event, He turned on the umbrella light and gave me the flasher to use remotely... It was about an hour after being there and people had few drinks in them, that they started to get in line to be photographed, I was surpized as heck and over joyed!

So getting out of myself, moving beyond my ego, allowed me to record the open house, hang with the guys, play with the camera, meet new people, create new relationships and some wondrous photographs for my portfolio...
You can go to my facebook page or http://www.redbubble.com/people/jeffstroud to view of this event and others as well...

What places of the world are sacred to you?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 08, 2009:

Dsc_8130
Yes I realize that there are energy pocket in many different area of the world, and that we create sacred space during rituals, circles, meditations, retreat, fire ceremonies, sweat lodge, erotic/tantra sessions, yet all area of the world are sacred! All areas of the world and the world is sacred within itself when we bring our consciousness to it, when we experience the sacredness in all events in our lives, our homes, our cars, our relationships, our money, or lack of money, or abundance or our seemingly lack of abundance....

What places of the world are sacred to me? All places of the world are sacred to me... for each every place is co-create from the mind of God/Goddess/Source for us to experience who we are...

What new ideas are bubbling in you these days?

Dsc_8000
Hey this just happened moments ago, someone on a community list Radical Faeries is seeking some one to rent studio space for $175.00 a month, plus utilities... and I responded that I was interested... In my head I heard myself say "did you just do that"? Before the message was cold Matt was calling me, connecting to see if we could get together, show me the space, etc...
I was like Wow!
So what is bubbling up for me, must be to take my photography to a new level... space to work, studio shoots, creating framing... be in creative energy! Far out dude!
I am going to go check it out in few hours... no commitments yet but... who knows...

continued awareness II

Posted on Jun 12th, 2009 by Jeff : messenger Jeff
It seems in the past few days my life has come to a screeching halt!!!! Bam! No particular reason... self sabotage, procrastination, laziness? yes, no, maybe? It seems after I experience the crowds of people, talking, interacting, I have to regroup, pull back, sit with what the experience was and was not? Also gathering energy for the next venture out into the "real" world of over stimulation.

I have been on my laptop, making new friends, connecting with old, challenging my mind. I have been assisting my friend with her life challenges, I have been reading, spiritual material, I have been photography, viewing those, sharing those, I have been gardening, a little bit...

I did not get to view the studio space I blog about a few days ago but hopefully today, the reason is I was trying to save gas and do one trip... so that vision is still on...

What is this all about, this blog is all about telling on myself, reporting into you all, that this is life, my life... its not big, its not all that important, it is amazing at times, it seem boring at times... but is it.

On Tuesday June 9th 2009 I celebrating 20 years sober, the path has been wandering and wondering... another blog about that... but I would not be here today if I had not been brought down by the addictions, I would not be here today if I had not sought to put down the addictions and become aware of who I am within myself...

What belief would you like to give up?

Posted on Jun 17th, 2009 by Jeff : messenger Jeff
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 17, 2009:

I would give up my belief in belief...

Creating consciousness within myself, my mind, my heart, expanding my soul through experiences of spiritual evolution allows me to let go of all the old pattens of belief's given to me by church, school, society, culture, etc, to co-create ever changing belief in myself and the world around me...

Question is what are your beliefs and are they yours, and when you experience something different are you able to move beyond those, to understand, accept, and let go? Evolution is a tricky, painful experience...

What keeps you from being present?

Posted on Jun 19th, 2009 by Jeff : messenger Jeff
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for June 19, 2009:

This is another one of those questions, that simply has as many answers as it has questions...

What keeps me from being present, is my ego, yes of course I blame those out there, the day, the noise, the traffic, the ever multi-tasking mind set of the world...

What keeps me Present is answering these questions...

The only thing that keeps one from being present is yourself...

Energy Healing Circle

Posted on Jun 23rd, 2009 by Jeff : messenger Jeff
Part of my self-awareness process has been to connect, with healer's, artist, creative beings in a more powerful experience... I did that last night. With a group of people I met on Meetup.com. The original group was and is more of a discussion group of books, modalities, etc... This group has now expanded to a second night a week to a healing circle, offering energy healing to select members, as well as, in time, Tarot Reading, study of Crystals, chanting, etc...

To cause myself to go, in an earth friendly manner, I offer to share ride or to drive others... because I know myself well enough, if I have made a commitment or have created some type of responsibility for myself I am must more likely to attend...
Some one responded to my message, and so the connection was made...

Yet what I want to write about more than anything is the enhancement of my energy today, the illumination of the world around me today... I am setting here and I am heating up, and it has get to get hot... There is a part of me that is exhausted too.
So to honor that healing energy, the enlivened energy I will move away for the computer today, be outside, take my camera into the world... or just sit in the grass, maybe even do some work in the garden...

I will write more about the process or experience of the circle later today or tomorrow... now the words are useless, and stuck some where.

Besides the heightened sense of heat, there is a denseness in my Solar Plexus, an illumination of light around things, ( oh it could be the Sun which we have not really seen in days)... I feel the need to get wet, to shower, to cleanse... hmmm...
